Botox 101: When to Start, What It Treats, and Why It's Not Just for Wrinkles

When you hear Botox, chances are you picture someone smoothing out forehead lines. Or maybe you’ve seen those dramatic before-and-after reels on Instagram.
But Botox is more than just a fix for visible wrinkles. It’s evolved into one of the most versatile and widely used aesthetic treatments out there.
So let’s TOX about it... what is Botox, when should you consider it, and what areas can it actually treat?
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is a neuromodulator, which is just a fancy way of saying it temporarily relaxes specific muscles in the face. It’s made from a purified protein called botulinum toxin type A, and it works by blocking the nerve signals that tell those muscles to contract. When the muscles are relaxed, the skin above them doesn’t crease as much. This helps smooth fine lines and can also prevent deeper wrinkles from forming over time.
At Rejuve, we use a few different brands of anti-wrinkle injections. They all work in a similar way, but each one has its own features that may make it better suited for certain goals, areas, or skin types:
Dysport: Spreads a little more easily, which can be helpful in larger areas like the forehead or for people with strong muscle movement. It may also kick in slightly faster than other brands.
Xeomin: A purified version of botulinum toxin that contains no extra additives. It’s often chosen by people who prefer a “cleaner” option or who haven’t responded well to other brands.
Daxxify: Known for longer-lasting results (sometimes up to 6 months.) It’s a great choice for clients who want fewer maintenance visits throughout the year.
Jeuveau: Sometimes referred to as “Newtox,” this option is designed purely for aesthetic use and is popular for its smooth results and youthful look. It’s especially great for softening frown lines.
These are all FDA-approved treatments administered only by licensed medical professionals.
WHEN SHOULD YOU START BOTOX?
A lot of people start thinking about Botox in their 30s, when lines and creases start to linger a little longer. But it’s becoming more common to start earlier, in your mid-to-late 20s, as a way to stay ahead of deeper wrinkles.
Targeting specific muscles before lines fully set in can help you maintain smoother skin over time. It’s a subtle shift that can make a big difference in how your skin ages.
Everyone’s skin is different, but if you’re starting to notice fine lines or just want to keep things looking smooth for as long as possible, it might be the right time to start.
COMMON AREAS BOTOX CAN TREAT
It’s not just about the forehead. Botox is incredibly versatile and can be used in different areas depending on your goals. Some of the most common spots we treat at Rejuve include:
Forehead – smooths horizontal lines
Glabella (the “11s”) – softens vertical frown lines between the brows
Crow’s feet – reduces fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes
Lip flip – subtly lifts the upper lip for a fuller look without filler
Chin – smooths a pebbled or dimpled texture
Masseter – slims the jawline and helps with teeth grinding or tension
Jowls – gives a more lifted lower face
Neck – helps smooth horizontal lines or neck bands
Nose slimming – offers a subtle way to enhance balance and refinement in the nose
Each treatment is customized based on your facial structure, muscle movement, and desired results.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your Botox appointment at Rejuve is quick, simple, and designed to keep you comfortable throughout the process. We’ll start with a consultation to talk through your goals and assess your facial movements, so we can create a treatment plan just for you.
Before we begin, no numbing is needed. We use gentle vibration tools or ice packs to help make the injections feel as comfortable as possible. Most people say it feels like a quick pinch, and the treatment itself only takes a few minutes, quick enough that many clients book it as a “lunch break procedure.”
Some redness or mild swelling right after is common, but it usually fades within 15 to 30 minutes. You can go about the rest of your day as usual, just avoid touching the area or doing any intense physical activity that same day.
We’ll also go over aftercare instructions and let you know when to expect results. Most clients begin to see changes within 3 to 5 days, with full results around the two-week mark.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?
Results typically last around three to six months, but it varies from person to person. Your metabolism, activity level, and even how expressive you are can all affect how long Botox lasts.
Many clients find that with regular treatments, their results start to last a little longer between visits. If you’ve had lines developing over time, it might take a few sessions to really see them soften. This is simply because those muscles have been active for a long time, and it can take time to retrain them.
There’s no ideal age to begin, and there’s no pressure to start at a certain time. It really depends on your skin, your lifestyle, and what feels right for you.
BOTOX WORKS BEST AS PART OF A BIGGER PLAN
Botox is a powerful tool for smoothing expression lines, but it isn’t a replacement for a good skincare routine or treatments that target skin tone and texture. It works best as part of a broader approach to skin health, and we’ll help you build the right strategy for you.
BUSTING COMMON BOTOX MYTHS
We hear a lot of questions and concerns from first-time clients, and many of them stem from myths or outdated info. Let’s talk through a few of the most common ones we get in the treatment room:
Myth 1: Botox will make your face look frozen
Not when it’s done correctly. At Rejuve, we take a conservative approach that’s all about enhancing your natural beauty, not overdoing it. You’ll still be able to make expressions and move your face. The goal is always to soften, not freeze.
Myth 2: Botox is only for people with deep wrinkles
We actually treat a lot of clients in their 20s and 30s who are using Botox preventatively. Starting early can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and keep deeper wrinkles from forming. It’s not just a fix, it can be part of your skincare strategy.
Myth 3: Once you start, you have to keep doing it forever
Nope. You’re not locked in. If you decide to take a break or stop altogether, your lines will gradually return over time. It’s a personal choice, and your skin will simply go back to aging naturally.
Myth 4: Botox is only for forehead wrinkles
It’s actually super versatile. We treat areas like the brow, around the eyes, lips (hello lip flip), chin, jawline, and neck too. It’s all about targeting the areas that matter most to you.
Myth 5: Botox is unsafe
Botox has been safely used for decades when administered by experienced medical professionals. At Rejuve, our injectors are licensed medical professionals with advanced knowledge of facial anatomy and years of clinical experience.
IS BOTOX RIGHT FOR YOU?
Botox is safe for most people, but there are a few things we’ll check in with you about before getting started.
You’ll want to hold off if you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain medical conditions, or have a skin issue in the area being treated. And if you’ve ever had a reaction to botulinum toxin in the past, that’s something we’ll definitely want to talk about.
We’ll also go over any medications or supplements you’re taking. This includes things like blood thinners, herbal products, or anything that might increase bruising.
Botox should always be administered by a licensed medical provider. At Rejuve, your treatment will be performed by experienced healthcare professionals who understand facial anatomy and how to deliver safe, natural-looking results.
If you're unsure or have questions, that’s totally okay. We’ll talk everything through during your consultation and help you decide what makes the most sense for your goals.
